Counseling for stress and anxiety

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and can actually be beneficial in some situations. You might feel anxious when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or when making an important decision.

But an Anxiety Disorder involves more than temporary worry or fear.

Symptoms can include:

  • difficulty controlling the worry

  • muscle tension

  • sleep problems

  • restlessness or feeling wound up

  • fatigue

  • difficulty concentrating

Any of these can become problems that do not go away and can get worse over time.

When feelings of fear and anxiety begin to interfere with daily activities in areas of school, work, and/or personal relationships, they could be a sign of an Anxiety Disorder.  While you may realize these feelings are excessive, you could have difficulty controlling them on your own.

There are a wide variety of Anxiety Disorders, including Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder to name a few. Collectively they are among the most

common mental disorders experienced by Americans.  In the US, 18% of adults are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder every year.

While medications are sometimes used in the management of Anxiety Disorders, psychotherapy, or talk therapy -- alone or in combination with medication treatment -- has been found to be highly successful in treatment of such disorders.

You might think that talking about what makes you feel scared or nervous will just make things worse.

But research shows that counseling for anxiety can help you understand the source of your fears, and gain tools for coping when you feel about to be overwhelmed by anxiety.

At Highland Counseling Services, our therapists have expertise in treating a wide range of Anxiety Disorders through various techniques directed at your specific anxieties and tailored your needs.

Many clients who have sought counseling for anxiety initially thought that there was nothing that could be done. They believed they would always be overly sensitive, or "high strung."  And then they discovered the techniques to counter anxious thinking, and their lives changed a lot.

It may be a bit anxiety-provoking right now to think about talking about what freaks you out.  You will be surprised how much it actually helps to process your sources of and responses to anxiety with a trained professional.

Imagine a calmer, more empowered life.
